Brief Profile of Department/Institute
The Post Graduate Department of Philosophy is one of the oldest departments of Patna University established in the year 1918 as a unit of Patna College. The department was shifted to Darbhanga house and became an independent unit since 1957. The Department aims to impart Post Graduate teaching as well as facilitate research work.
The Department is privileged to have renowned teachers and scholars like – Prof. Charu Chandra Sinha (1st Head of PG Department), Dr. D. M. Datta, Prof. Hari Mohan Jha, Dr. Aniruddh Jha, Dr. Ashok Kumar Verma, Dr. Lala Panchanand Sinha, Dr. I. N. Sinha, Dr. Shatrughan Jha, Dr. R.C. Sinha, Dr. Ratna Choudhary, Dr. Madhuri Verma, Dr. R. N. Prasad, Dr. Ramashankar Arya, Dr. Punam Singh, Prof. Ramendra Nath, Prof. Rajesh Kumar Singh. The department is presently headed by Prof. Ameeta Jaiswal.
The teachers of the department attend Seminars, Conference and Workshops and present research papers, which are published in reputed journals. They are also guiding a number of research Scholars on important Philosophical themes. The department conducts various curricular, co-curricular and extra curricular activities.
Every year a good number of students qualify in NET, GATE and JRF (UGC and ICPR). Students of the Department have qualified for Assistant Professor conducted by University Service Commission. Some other Alumni are well placed in Government Services.

The Department of Philosophy aims to become a center of academic excellence in Post Graduate teaching and research and to empower students with logical reasoning and analytic skills for solving problems in all walks of life.
